PlayStation steps

Owners of the physical or digital PS4 version can download the PS5 version from the PS5 GTAV product page in the PlayStation Store. Disc owners must have the disc in the console to verify ownership. Official Rockstar points to PlayStation’s own guide for upgrading a PS4 game to the PS5 version for the step-by-step, and to PlayStation support for further help.

Xbox steps

Owners of the digital Xbox One version can download the Xbox Series X|S version from its product page in the Xbox Store. Physical disc owners cannot upgrade to a digital version because of platform limitations. Official Rockstar lists two routes.

On the console

  1. Open the Xbox home page.
  2. Select My Games and Apps.
  3. Select Full Library in the left-side menu.
  4. Select Owned Games in the top menu.
  5. Find and select “Grand Theft Auto Online (Xbox Series X|S)”. Rockstar uses that exact title in its steps.
  6. Select Install.

On the Xbox website

  1. Open xbox.com and select Search.
  2. Enter “Grand Theft Auto V”.
  3. Select “Grand Theft Auto V (Xbox One & Xbox Series X|S)”.
  4. Select Install To and pick the device where you want the game.

What happens to your progress

Players on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One can only migrate Story Mode and Online progress to PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S. Profiles cannot be migrated between PlayStation or Xbox console families and PC. (Rockstar Newswire, February 27, 2025) Official That post was written for the PC upgrade, and it states the console rule in a single sentence. If you are unsure, check your in-game prompts after installing, and ask Rockstar Support.

Common mistakes

  1. Trying to upgrade an Xbox disc. Rockstar says it cannot be done. The path for Xbox is a digital copy.
  2. Leaving the PlayStation disc in the box. Disc owners must have the disc in the console to verify ownership.
  3. Searching for a separate purchase. The upgrade is free for owners, so look for the install button on the product page instead of a buy button.
  4. Expecting a cross-platform save. Progress cannot be migrated between PlayStation, Xbox and PC.

PC players

The PC upgrade is a separate process with its own rules. See GTA 5 Enhanced vs Legacy on PC.
