GTA 5 Enhanced vs Legacy on PC: Which Version to Play and How Migration Works

The short version
Rockstar released a free upgrade for GTA V on PC. Everyone who already owned the game on PC got GTAV Enhanced, and the existing version was renamed GTAV Legacy, which Rockstar says it keeps supporting (Rockstar Newswire). Official The two versions are separate games in your library, so the choice is yours.
Who gets what
- You already own GTA V on PC: Players who already own GTAV on PC get GTAV Enhanced for free. The existing version was renamed GTAV Legacy and keeps being supported. Official
- You are buying now: New buyers on PC get GTAV Enhanced together with GTAV Legacy. Official
- Where to get it: Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, Epic Games Store, and the Microsoft Store and PC Game Pass (added April 15, 2025). (Rockstar Newswire, Rockstar Newswire) Official
What Enhanced adds
Rockstar lists these for Enhanced. They are features of the upgraded version and not of Legacy. Official
- Graphics: Ray traced shadows and reflections, plus PC-only ray traced ambient occlusion and global illumination, with the recommended specifications.
- Upscaling: Support for AMD FSR and NVIDIA DLSS. At launch Rockstar said Frame Generation support was planned for both at a future date.
- Other: DualSense controller support with adaptive triggers, faster loading with SSD and DirectStorage on supported setups, better support for higher resolutions, aspect ratios and frame rates, and Dolby Atmos audio.
- GTA+: GTA+ can be subscribed to from GTAV Enhanced. Availability varies by territory.
Why Legacy still exists
Legacy stays available so players whose hardware does not meet the minimum requirements of Enhanced can keep playing. Official You can check your machine against the system requirements. If your PC does not meet Enhanced’s minimum, Legacy is the version to use.
You cannot mix versions online
Legacy and Enhanced players are separate. To play with friends, everyone needs to be on the same version. Official If you play with friends, agree on one version before anyone migrates anything.
How progress migration works
Rockstar described the migration in a newswire post dated February 27, 2025. The rules below are from that post. Official
Story Mode
- Story Mode progress is uploaded from the Pause Menu in GTAV Legacy. You can upload again and overwrite the previous upload as many times as you like.
- The uploaded Story Mode save can be migrated to GTAV Enhanced only once. You can keep playing the Legacy save, but progress cannot be copied back.
GTA Online
- The GTA Online character transfer is a one-time migration. It does not delete your Legacy progress and it cannot be reversed. It covers characters, GTA$, progression, stats, vehicles, properties, weapons, clothing and player-created jobs.
Consoles and PC are separate. Players on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One can only migrate Story Mode and Online progress to PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S. Profiles cannot be migrated between PlayStation or Xbox console families and PC. Official
Our reading of these rules, not a Rockstar statement: because the Story Mode migration happens only once, upload and migrate the save you actually want to continue with. Keep playing Legacy only if you do not need that progress in Enhanced.
Common mistakes
- Planning to play with a friend on a different version. It does not work. Pick one version for the group.
- Expecting to copy a save back to Legacy. Rockstar says progress cannot be copied back.
- Migrating the wrong save. The Story Mode migration is one-time, so check which save you uploaded.
- Assuming a stale rule still holds. The migration details are from February 27, 2025, so confirm the on-screen steps in the game or on Rockstar’s GTA V support page.
