GTA 5 PC Troubleshooting Checklist: Crashes, Freezes and Install Errors

By OpenWorldDaily Last updated Facts checked October 19, 2026

Quick answerWork through Rockstar's eight steps in order: update the game and your drivers, install the Rockstar Games Launcher, verify your game files, repair DirectX and Visual C++, test your antivirus, read launcher.log, and generate DxDiag and MSInfo files for Rockstar Support.

Troubleshooting steps

  1. Rockstar lists this first.

  2. Rockstar links its own driver article and the NVIDIA and AMD download pages (it says "drivers" and names no component).

  3. Rockstar links the launcher download page.

  4. Rockstar has one article per launcher for this step.

  5. Default location: C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto V\Redistributables

  6. If the game launches without it, Rockstar recommends using a different antivirus program.

  7. Location: My Documents\Rockstar Games\GTAV

  8. Rockstar links an article on how to generate both.

How to use this checklist

The checklist above follows the order in Rockstar’s article, last updated October 7, 2025 (Rockstar Support). Official Tick each step as you finish it. Your progress is saved in this browser only, so you can close the page and come back.

Rockstar’s article covers installation issues, crashes, freezes and poor performance on PC. The article is laid out as two numbered lists. The first has four steps (patch, drivers, launcher, verify files). After a note about DirectX and Visual C++ errors, a second list of four starts again at 1: run the redistributable installers, test the antivirus, check launcher.log, generate DxDiag and MSInfo. Our checklist numbers them 1 to 8 in the same order. The article does not say whether the last three apply only to DirectX or Visual C++ errors or to every problem, so we list them as general steps. Apart from that note, it does not say which step fits which symptom. Official Start at the top and stop when the game runs.

What each step is for

All eight steps above come from Rockstar’s article. Nothing in the checklist comes from forums or community posts. The notes below are our own commentary in plain words: they are not Rockstar statements, and they are general advice.

  • Patch and drivers first. A crash that was fixed in a patch or a driver update is the cheapest to remove, so Rockstar puts these first.
  • Verify files before reinstalling. Verifying checks the installed files against the originals and can repair damaged ones, so it is quicker than a full reinstall. The exact menu depends on your launcher, and Rockstar has an article for each.
  • DirectX and Visual C++ errors are a separate branch. If an error message names Visual C++, Direct3D or DirectX, Rockstar sends you to the installers in the Redistributables folder of the game’s install folder. If you see no such message, you can skip that step.
  • Antivirus is a test, not a fix. Rockstar asks you to test with it off. If the game launches without it, Rockstar recommends using a different antivirus.
  • The log and the diagnostics come last. They help you or Rockstar Support find the cause when the earlier steps did not.

When the checklist does not fix it

Collect the DxDiag and MSInfo files from step eight and contact Rockstar through its GTA V support page. Include what you already tried. That is our advice, based on Rockstar asking you to generate and review those files.

Also check that your PC meets the system requirements. Rockstar’s troubleshooting article does not discuss requirements, but a machine below the minimum is a common reason for poor performance. That second point is general experience and not a Rockstar statement.

Common mistakes

  1. Reinstalling before verifying. Verification is quicker, and Rockstar lists it first.
  2. Skipping the internet connection. The game applies the latest patch when it launches online, according to Rockstar.
  3. Running a step in the wrong launcher. Use the verify steps for the launcher that owns your copy: Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam or Epic Games.
  4. Ignoring the Enhanced and Legacy split. Players on the two versions are separate. See the version guide if you are unsure which one you launched.

FAQ

Where is launcher.log?

Rockstar lists it in My Documents\Rockstar Games\GTAV.

What are DxDiag and MSInfo files for?

DxDiag shows your system specs. MSInfo has a Windows Error Reporting section that shows what is failing if the game crashes. Rockstar links an article on how to generate both.

Should I uninstall my antivirus?

Rockstar suggests checking that GTAV is an exception, and disabling or temporarily uninstalling the program to test. If the game launches without it, Rockstar recommends using a different antivirus.

Where do I contact Rockstar Support?

Through the request form on Rockstar's support site, which is available 24/7 according to its pages.
