GTA 6 Age Verification: Do You Need ID? (US, AU, UK)

The short answer
Rockstar has not announced any ID, selfie or age check for Grand Theft Auto VI. Whether you will meet one depends on where you live and, more precisely, on which account you use to buy and play it:
- Story mode: no check announced anywhere.
- Online: no online mode is announced, so there is nothing to verify yet. See GTA 6 Online.
- Console or store account: this is where the real rules are, and only in some countries.
The game’s rating is a separate question. For what the ESRB rating means, see GTA 6 age rating explained for parents. This page is about proof of age.
Country by country
| United States | Australia | United Kingdom | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rockstar check announced | No | No | No |

| PlayStation account | No program found | Verify to add R18+ games to your library | Verify to keep chat and similar features |
| Xbox account | Not on Microsoft’s list | Verify for new 18+ purchases and downloads | Can verify now; restrictions not specified |
| Can you still play without verifying? | Nothing to verify | Owned games yes; adding new R 18+ games no | Yes on PlayStation, minus communication features |
Every cell above comes from a page named in the sections below. Where we could not confirm something, we say so.
United States
Rockstar and the platforms. We found no Rockstar statement about age checks for GTA 6. PlayStation has age-verification FAQs for the UK and Australia (linked below). The same FAQ address on the US site returned “page not found” when we checked on October 20, 2026, so we found no US program today. Official We cannot rule out a later rollout: nothing we read gives a US date either way.
Microsoft’s account age-assurance page lists Australia, Brazil, Singapore and the United Kingdom as the places where you can verify now. The US is not on that list (Microsoft Support). Official
State law. The US law with the most coverage is Texas SB 2420, the App Store Accountability Act. Its text says it “takes effect January 1, 2026” and requires app store owners to use “a commercially reasonable method of verification” and to get parental consent for minors (Texas Legislature). Official It defines a mobile device as “a portable, wireless electronic device, including a tablet or smartphone” and does not mention game consoles. We did not find a platform statement saying it applies to a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, so we cannot say it does.
On July 6, 2026 the Supreme Court declined to reinstate the orders that blocked Texas from enforcing the law, so it can be enforced “at least for now” while the case continues (SCOTUSblog). Reported Other states, including California, have passed their own age-related app or operating-system laws. We could not read those texts, so we do not describe them; the California law, as reported, asks for a declared age at account setup, not ID.
Bottom line for US players: nothing we could verify requires ID for GTA 6. If a platform adds a check later, it will most likely show up as a prompt on your console account. We’ll update this page if that happens.
Australia
Australia is the strictest of the three, and the rule is about online games. Australia’s Age-Restricted Material Codes, overseen by the eSafety Commissioner, took full effect on Monday, March 9, 2026. For gaming, eSafety says: “Users will have to complete some form of age assurance to access online games classified R18+ by the Australian Classification Board. For all other games, no age checks are required” (eSafety Commissioner). Official The same page says app stores must take steps to stop under-18s buying or downloading R18+ apps, and that age assurance is managed by the service you use, “not the Australian Government.” Official
Is GTA 6 R18+ in Australia? PlayStation’s Australian store page for the Ultimate Edition shows an “ACB R 18+” rating badge (PlayStation Store AU). Official That is a store listing, not the Classification Board’s own record, which we could not open. We did not check Xbox’s Australian listing.
What the console makers do:
- PlayStation: “Age verification is now required for Australian adult accounts to add Restricted (R 18+) rated games and content from PlayStation Store to your library.” Without it you “can continue playing on PlayStation,” but cannot add R 18+ games until you verify (PlayStation Australia). Official
- Xbox / Microsoft: Microsoft announced on August 10, 2026 that Australian users of the Microsoft Store and Xbox storefront “will soon be prompted” to confirm they are over 18 for 18+ apps and games (Microsoft News Asia). Official Its account page, which lists Australia, Brazil, Singapore and the UK, says adults who skip verification “won’t be able to view or make new purchases or downloads of games and apps rated 18+.” Games you already own are not affected. Methods include a selfie age estimate or a document upload (Microsoft Support). Official
An Australian adult who wants to buy GTA 6 digitally will probably need a verified account first. What the platforms do for a physical disc or an existing pre-order is not covered by the pages we read, so we leave it open. Verifying before launch day avoids a last-minute problem.
What about GTA Online in Australia? The evidence is thin and dated. RockstarINTEL wrote on March 6, based on game files found by data miners, that Australian GTA Online players would see a QR-code age check from the 9th (RockstarINTEL). Rumor / unconfirmed GTA BOOM tested on March 10 and said its staff entered GTA Online in Australia with no prompt (GTA BOOM). Rumor / unconfirmed We found no Rockstar support page on the subject. Claims that the same check will apply to a GTA 6 online mode are unconfirmed, since no such mode is announced.
The A$49.5 million figure
Several outlets cite a fine of about 49.5 million. These are Australian dollars. eSafety’s own wording is narrower: “A breach of a direction to comply with a code can result in penalties of up to $49.5 million per breach.” Official That is a ceiling for companies that ignore a regulator’s direction. It is not a fine on players, and not an automatic penalty for any single game.
United Kingdom
The Online Safety Act applies to “search services and services that allow users to post content online or to interact with each other,” with fines up to £18 million or 10 percent of qualifying worldwide revenue (GOV.UK). Official That wording points at chat, sharing and other social features, not at a single-player campaign. We tried to read Ofcom’s own guidance, but its site blocked our access, so we rely on GOV.UK and the platforms.
PlayStation applies it to accounts: “Age verification is now required for UK & Ireland adult accounts to access certain features.” Players who have not verified “can continue playing on PlayStation but communication features won’t be available” (PlayStation UK, updated June 1, 2026). Official Microsoft lists the UK among the places where you can verify now. We did not find which Xbox features a UK check unlocks, so we do not list them. PlayStation’s UK page covers Ireland too; we did not check the rest of the EU.
Canada
We found no Canadian law or platform program that requires age verification for a single-player console game. The ESRB rating also applies there (rating guide).
Where the “ID to play GTA 6” claim comes from
Viral posts and some headlines say you will need ID or a face scan to play GTA 6. The solid part is the Australian rules above, which apply to 18+ games on PlayStation and Xbox accounts. Reports that tie GTA 6 to Australian checks build on those rules and on Rockstar’s earlier GTA Online work. None of them quotes Rockstar, which has announced nothing for GTA 6. Rumor / unconfirmed
What to do before launch
- Check your console account. If you are in Australia, verify your adult account now rather than on November 19, 2026.
- Treat the verification page as official only if you reach it from your console or its own support site. Fake verification pages are an easy scam, so do not follow links from random posts.
- For a minor’s account, use the console’s family tools rather than an adult login. The rating guide has the steps.
- Do not assume single-player needs internet because of a check. What offline play does and does not need is in GTA 6 offline and internet requirements.
What we could not verify
- Any Rockstar statement on age verification for GTA 6.
- The Classification Board’s own R18+ record for GTA 6 (we saw only PlayStation’s store badge).
- Whether Texas’s law covers home consoles.
- How platforms treat physical discs and pre-orders in Australia.
- Ofcom’s own guidance on games.
FAQ
Do you need ID to play GTA 6?
Rockstar has announced no ID requirement. In the US we found no rule that forces one. In Australia, adult console accounts may have to verify before adding R18+ games.
Does GTA 6 require age verification in the US?
Not that we could find. Rockstar has said nothing, and PlayStation and Xbox list no US age-verification program. A Texas app store law exists, but its text does not name game consoles.
Does GTA 6 require age verification in Australia?
The checks come from the platforms. PlayStation requires verified adult accounts to add R 18+ games to a library, and Microsoft requires it for new 18+ downloads. Rockstar has announced nothing.
Does GTA 6 require age verification in the UK?
On PlayStation, UK and Ireland adult accounts must verify to keep chat and similar features, but unverified players can keep playing. We found no UK rule that gates single-player games.
Is the A$49.5 million Australian fine real?
The eSafety Commissioner states penalties of up to $49.5 million (Australian dollars) per breach of a direction to comply with a code. It applies to companies, not players, and is not an automatic fine.
