GTA 6 Age Rating: ESRB Mature 17+ Explained for Parents
The rating
Rockstar’s game page lists the rating as ESRB Mature (Rockstar). Official The ESRB describes the M rating as “generally suitable for ages 17 and up” and says such games can include heavy violence, gore, sexual material and harsh profanity (ESRB). Official
If you are buying for someone under 17, that is the answer you need first: the rating board says this is not aimed at them.
The content descriptors
Content descriptors are the labels that explain what pushed a game into its category. The ones Rockstar lists for this game are: Official
- Blood and gore
- Intense violence
- Nudity
- Strong language
- Strong sexual content
- Drug and alcohol use
These are the ESRB’s categories, applied by the ESRB. We have not read the full rating summary the board writes for each game, so we are not describing specific scenes. If you want that level of detail, look for the ESRB’s own rating entry for the game once it is available on their site.
In-game purchases
Rockstar’s page also notes in-game purchases (Rockstar). Official That is an “interactive element” in the ESRB system. The ESRB defines it as offers to buy digital goods or premiums with real money, such as skins or season passes, and uses a separate label when the buyer does not know what they will get, as with loot boxes (ESRB). Official
Two things we do not know:
- What the purchases are. Rockstar’s page does not list them.
- Whether the random-items label applies. The page we read shows the standard label, not the random-items one.
Interactive elements do not change the rating itself, according to the ESRB. They are a heads-up about features.
Single-player and online
Rockstar calls the game a single-player experience. No online mode is announced, and online features are the usual source of “Users Interact” warnings. Our GTA 6 Online guide covers what is confirmed. The rating on the page today reflects what Rockstar submitted for the game as announced, and a later online mode could be rated separately. We do not know the plan. Rumor / unconfirmed
What parents can do
This is general advice, not specific to this game.
- Check the rating before buying a gift. The rating is printed on store pages and boxes.
- Use console parental controls. PlayStation and Xbox both offer controls that can limit purchases and games by age rating. Set them up on the console before the game arrives.
- Mind the payment method. If a card is saved on the account, in-game purchases and subscriptions can be made easily. Our guide to the free GTA+ month shows one subscription that renews unless canceled.
- Talk about it. A rating is a starting point. Knowing what the game contains lets you decide with the player instead of guessing.
What the rating does not tell you
- It does not say how much of the game contains each descriptor.
- It does not say whether the story handles those themes seriously or for laughs.
- It does not cover online interactions, because those depend on the mode and the people in it.
For the story setup Rockstar has described, see GTA 6 story and characters.
Where it differs by country
The ESRB is the US and Canada system. Other regions use their own boards, such as PEGI in Europe. We did not find the ratings from those boards, so this page covers the American rating only.
