GTA 6 Download Size: What We Know and What We Don't
The honest answer
Rockstar has not announced a download size for Grand Theft Auto VI. Neither PlayStation nor Xbox has either. Gaming Bible says the same: no total size has been confirmed, and the final figure may differ after a day-one update and later optimization (Gaming Bible). Official
Every number you see right now is a guess.
The estimates people are quoting
We found three kinds of claims:
- About 120 GB to 200 GB. The range most guides use (GTABoom). Rumor / unconfirmed
- Around 150 GB. A single-number estimate that also shows up in guides. Rumor / unconfirmed
- Larger numbers such as 300 GB, or even 676 GB. Grindout notes that these circulate but should not be presented as requirements (Grindout). Rumor / unconfirmed
Nobody outside Rockstar has the file, so none of these rests on a measurement. They are extrapolations from other big games or from the map’s size, and they disagree for that reason.
Why no official figure yet
Publishers often publish the size close to preload, because the number depends on the final build and on how the files are compressed for each console. That is a common pattern, not a Rockstar statement. If the pattern holds, the number may appear around November 12, 2026, when digital pre-orders are reported to be able to preload (Hollywood Reporter).
What the download time looks like
This table is arithmetic, not a prediction. It assumes your connection runs at its full rated speed the whole time, which it rarely does.
| Size | 50 Mbps | 100 Mbps | 300 Mbps | 1 Gbps |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 GB | 4 h 27 min | 2 h 13 min | 44 min | 13 min |
| 150 GB | 6 h 40 min | 3 h 20 min | 1 h 7 min | 20 min |
| 200 GB | 8 h 53 min | 4 h 27 min | 1 h 29 min | 27 min |
Add time for slowdowns during busy hours. On launch week, store servers can be busy too, which is a reason to preload if you can.
How much space to keep free
Consoles need room beyond the game itself while installing, since the system may unpack files and apply updates. Treat it like this:
- If your console has a 1 TB drive, check what is already on it. Many drives fill up with a few large games.
- Free at least 200 GB to be covered by the common estimates. Rumor / unconfirmed
- If you plan to keep other big games installed, consider an external or expanded drive. That is general advice, not a Rockstar requirement.
PS5 and Xbox differences
We found no official numbers for either console. Sizes can differ by platform because of how each stores and compresses files, so do not assume the PlayStation and Xbox numbers will match.
What to do now
- Wait for the official number from Rockstar’s newswire or your store page.
- Free some space early. It is easier than clearing a drive at midnight.
- Plan to preload. See the preload guide.
When a real figure is published, we replace this whole page’s top section with it and move the estimates down as history. The “last updated” date shows when that happens.
