GTA 6 Region Lock and Code Redemption: PlayStation and Xbox Rules

The rule in one sentence
Rockstar Support says region restrictions for GTA 6 code redemptions are based on the region associated with your platform account, and the version you buy must match that region (Rockstar Support). Official
This matters most for boxed copies, which contain a download code instead of a disc. See the physical edition guide. It also applies to anyone who buys from a store in a different country.
PlayStation: region groups
Rockstar Support says PlayStation codes bought in one region can only be used by accounts registered in a specific set of countries (Rockstar Support). Official
| Code region | Accounts registered in |
|---|---|
| North America | Canada, United States |
| United Kingdom | United Kingdom |
| Japan | Japan |
| Korea | South Korea |
| Brazil | Brazil |
| LATAM | Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay |
| Saudi Arabia and UAE | Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates |
| Rest of Asia | Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand |
| Rest of EMEA and Asia | Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine |
In plain terms: a US box works on a US or Canadian PlayStation account, but not on a UK account, and the reverse. Countries not listed in the text we read are not covered by this page, so check Rockstar Support for yours. Rumor / unconfirmed
Japan. PlayStation codes bought in Japan expire 170 days after the issuance date, which Rockstar says is the launch date, November 19, 2026, because of regional regulations (Rockstar Support). Official
Xbox: no region lock
Rockstar Support says codes bought for Xbox are not region-locked (Rockstar Support). Official That is a statement about codes. Store prices, currencies and availability still follow your Microsoft account’s region, and we did not read anything about that. Rumor / unconfirmed
How to avoid activation problems
Rockstar’s own advice is to buy from a retailer in the country of your platform account to avoid potential activation problems (Rockstar Support). Official A short checklist, which is our summary of that advice:
- Check which region your PlayStation account is registered in.
- Buy the box from a retailer in that region.
- Redeem the code as soon as you receive it. Codes can be used as soon as they are received to support preload (Rockstar Support). Official
- If you plan to buy the Ultimate Edition Upgrade, do it in the store of the same account after redeeming the Standard code.
Pre-order bonus offers and countries
The free GTA+ month has its own country rules on PlayStation, with a list of excluded stores, covered in the preorder guide.
What we do not know
- What happens to a code bought in the wrong region. Rockstar says there may be activation problems and does not describe a refund process in the text we read. Rumor / unconfirmed
- Whether the US and Canadian price differences affect codes. They do not appear to, from the grouping above.
- Region rules for retailers’ digital keys that are not Rockstar codes. Rumor / unconfirmed
If a retailer or store tells you something different, Rockstar Support’s article wins, and we will update this page when it changes.
