GTA 6 Review Embargo: When Do Reviews Come Out?

Quick answer
Rockstar has not announced a review embargo, a review date or a review-copy plan. The game launches November 19, 2026 (Take-Two). Official Everything else on review timing comes from unnamed sources, and we label it that way.
The best guide to what happens next is Rockstar’s own history. In both of its last two big releases, the first reviews appeared one day before launch. For November 19, 2026 that would mean Wednesday, November 18. Rumor / unconfirmed

What we know about the GTA 6 review embargo reports
Reviews before launch. On October 14, 2026, Insider Gaming reported that GTA 6 reviews “will go live before the release on November 19.” It added that it has learned the preliminary embargo date but is not publishing it because it “is subject to change” (Insider Gaming). Rumor / unconfirmed The article cites no named source. One outlet, Notebookcheck, described the story as deleted. When we opened it on October 20 it was still online, with no update note.
Copies by the end of October. Asked on ResetEra whether review copies had gone out yet, the insider NateTheHate reportedly answered “Not yet but they will before end of the month,” according to Glitched. Rumor / unconfirmed We have not read the original post, so this reaches us secondhand.
No codes, play on site. In May 2026 a Brazilian journalist, Pedro Henrique Lutti Lippe, said on a podcast that nobody would get a key and that reviewers would play for days in a supervised location (Insider Gaming). Rumor / unconfirmed Rockstar has not confirmed or denied it.
These two rumors cannot both be right: codes in October and no codes at all point in opposite directions.
An earlier preview. MP1st reported on August 19, 2026, citing an unnamed source, that media attended a hands-off preview event in July and that impressions were set to go live alongside the Netflix premiere on August 27 (MP1st). Rumor / unconfirmed That is not a review: nobody played freely. It does suggest Rockstar already runs tightly timed embargoes for this game. Rockstar has not announced any of it. The October claim comes from a well-known insider on a forum, relayed by press. The May claim comes from a named journalist on a podcast. Neither has a publisher confirmation behind it. Our leaks guide explains how to weigh claims like this.
When did GTA V and Red Dead 2 reviews come out?
This is the part you can check yourself on Metacritic.
| Game | Release | Earliest reviews shown on Metacritic | Metascore |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto V (PS3) | September 17, 2013 | September 16, 2013 | 97 from 50 reviews |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 (PS4) | October 26, 2018 | October 25, 2018 | 97 from 109 reviews |
Sources: Metacritic pages for GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2, release dates from Wikipedia (GTA V, Red Dead Redemption 2). Reported Wikipedia takes its scores from Metacritic, so these are one source, not two. The scores are as read on October 20, 2026, and Metacritic updates them.
Two cautions. Metacritic shows the date of the earliest review, not a published embargo notice, and we did not verify the exact hour. Two games make a pattern. A tighter anti-leak plan could change it.
What is an embargo, and why does it matter?
A review embargo is an agreement: a publisher gives outlets early access, and the outlets promise not to publish before a set time. It decides how much time you get between reading reviews and the game unlocking.
Three timings are common: a day or two before release, on release day, or after launch. For a game that takes a long time to finish, an embargo one day out means you get the critics’ verdict only hours before launch, and no verdict from players at all.
Should you wait for reviews before buying?
That depends on what you stand to lose by waiting.
- If you pre-ordered, the pre-order guide covers what the pre-order includes. Cancellation terms depend on the store you bought from, and we have not checked them.
- If you want the bonus, note that the Vintage Vice City Pack offer must be claimed before November 20, 2026 (through 11:59:59 PM on November 19) (Xbox Store). Official Waiting for post-launch reviews means missing it.
- If you are fine paying later, wait for player reports from the first weekend. Critics play ahead of time, but they do not test your console or the first day on live servers.
Pre-orders opened June 25, 2026 (Take-Two), months before any review could exist. Official
Where the official information will appear
Check Rockstar’s newswire and Take-Two’s investor news first. If an embargo is announced, the platform stores and Metacritic are where the scores will collect. Our release date guide and the release time guide track the other launch details.
Reviews and scores: not out yet
There are no GTA 6 reviews. Any score you see today is invented or from a fake page. We will add a table here when the embargo lifts, with each outlet, its score and a link to the review.
How this page gets updated
We rewrite the status table above whenever Rockstar or Take-Two says something new, or when a claim is confirmed or dropped. The “last checked” date shows when we last read the sources.
FAQ
When do GTA 6 reviews come out?
No date is official. Insider Gaming reports reviews will go live before November 19, 2026 and says it knows a preliminary embargo date but is not publishing it. If Rockstar repeats its pattern with GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2, reviews would appear on November 18. That is an inference, not an announcement.
Has Rockstar announced a GTA 6 review embargo?
No. As of October 20, 2026, Rockstar and Take-Two have said nothing about an embargo or review copies.
Will there be GTA 6 review copies?
Unknown. One report says copies go out before the end of October. An earlier report says no codes will be sent at all and reviewers would play on site. Neither is confirmed, and they contradict each other.
What will the GTA 6 Metacritic score be?
Nobody can know yet. There are no reviews. For reference, GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 both have a Metascore of 97 (PS3 and PS4 versions).
Can I buy GTA 6 before the reviews are out?
Yes. Pre-orders have been open since June 25, 2026. Whether to wait for reviews is your call; see the pre-order guide for what you give up by waiting.
