GTA 6 Roads Will Be Narrower Than GTA 5's, and It Changes How You Drive

Last updated Facts checked October 21, 2026

Quick answerYes. According to Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, Rockstar art director Aaron Garbut says Vice City's streets are noticeably narrower than Los Santos', and combined with heavier traffic, driving should feel more like real city congestion.

Anyone who spent time cruising Los Santos knows the roads were wide open. You could floor it, weave past traffic and rarely feel boxed in. Rockstar is reportedly moving away from that in GTA 6.

What the art director says about the roads

According to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, who shared extra interview material in a new video, art director Aaron Garbut says Vice City’s streets are noticeably narrower. Combined with heavier traffic, the idea is that driving should feel more like real city congestion and less like an arcade racer. Reported

How narrower roads changed the city

The choice had a knock-on effect. With less road to work with, the team had to fit in more buildings and rethink the layout of the city around it. Garbut says this was settled early in development. You can see how the rest of the map fits together in our GTA 6 map guide.

A map in the works since 2015

Schreier also notes that some artists have been working on the map since 2015, when Rockstar sent developers to Miami for research. Most of the studio then turned to Red Dead Redemption 2, while a small team kept building Vice City. Reported For how the city has changed since its 2002 debut, read Vice City from 2002 to GTA 6.

Launch date

GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. More on timing in our release date guide.
