Vice City From 2002 to GTA 6: How a 1980s Miami Came Back

Last updated Facts checked October 19, 2026

Quick answerRockstar's 2002 game page sells Vice City as the 1980s. For GTA 6 Rockstar calls it a return to modern day Vice City, inside a state called Leonida. Dan Houser has named Scarface, Miami Vice and 80s childhoods as the original inspirations.

Same name, different decade

In 2002, Rockstar’s page for Grand Theft Auto: Vice City opens with “Welcome to the 1980s.” It sells a decade of excess and pastel suits, and a city that ranges from the beach to the swamps (Rockstar). Official

Twenty-plus years later, Rockstar uses the same city name in a very different sentence. Its November 2025 delay notice talks about “a return to modern day Vice City” (Rockstar). Official

That is the whole story in miniature. The place keeps its name and its neon. The year moves from the 1980s to today.

What the 2002 game was

Rockstar’s page lists the game as developed by Rockstar North, with a release date of October 27, 2002 (Rockstar). Official It also lists the platforms the game is on today, including PlayStation 4, PC, Mac, iOS and Android. Official Other outlets give slightly different launch dates by region and console, so if you are citing the date, use the Rockstar page as we do.

What the page confirms is the setting: the 1980s, a criminal rise, and a city built on contrast. The exact year is not on that page. CBR reports that Dan Houser puts the story in 1986 (CBR). Reported

Where the look came from

The most useful quote on this is from Houser himself. CBR reports him naming “Scarface, Miami Vice, and our ’80s childhoods” as the main inspirations. The article does not say which interview the quote comes from (CBR). Reported That is why we label it as press-reported and not official.

The same article describes Vice City as a fictional place based on Miami, Florida. Reported

Put those two together and the formula is clear: a real city, filtered through the pop culture of one decade, then pushed to an extreme. That is our summary of the sources, not a design statement from Rockstar.

The 2023 reveal

When Take-Two announced the new game on December 4, 2023, its release described the setting as the state of Leonida, home to Vice City (Take-Two). Official So from day one the pitch was bigger than one city. Vice City is the heart of a whole state.

What Rockstar says about Leonida now

Rockstar’s character and setting page frames it in a few short phrases (Rockstar). Official

  • It describes the neon-soaked streets of Vice City and beyond.
  • It calls Leonida the sunshine state and refers to the Keys.
  • It names six areas: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga.
  • One character is described as a veteran smuggler working out of the Keys.

One observation of ours: we did not find the word Florida in the text of that page. The nickname and the Keys point there, but Rockstar does not say so in the text we read. We treat Leonida as a fictional state.

Vice City across the years

The official dates we can point to:

  • October 27, 2002: the original game, as listed on Rockstar’s game page (Rockstar). Official
  • December 4, 2023: Take-Two announces the new game and places it in Leonida, home to Vice City (Take-Two). Official
  • November 6, 2025: Rockstar’s delay notice describes a return to modern day Vice City (Rockstar). Official
  • October 15, 2026: Rockstar’s newswire dates the Launch Trailer (Rockstar). Official
  • November 19, 2026: the launch date.

Between the first and the second entry in that list there is a 21-year gap, which is our arithmetic. That gap is the real reason the name carries weight.

What Rockstar’s wording tells us

The wording on Rockstar’s pages is short, so every word matters. This section is our reading, not a statement from Rockstar.

  • “Modern day” marks a clean break from the 1980s. Players who remember the original should not expect the same period.
  • “Return” signals a continuation of the name and the spirit, not necessarily of the map.
  • A “state” with named areas suggests the city is one piece of a larger setting. Rockstar’s page lists six areas, and we cover them in the map guide.

None of these readings is confirmed by the publisher beyond the words themselves.

What is the same, what is not

Same:

  • the city name, Vice City,
  • the neon look Rockstar still uses in its own wording,
  • a story built around crime and ambition.

Different:

  • the era, from the 1980s to modern day,
  • the scale, from one city to a whole state with six named areas,
  • the cast: Jason Duval, Lucia Caminos and others described on Rockstar’s page. We cover them in the story and characters guide.

What we do not know

We do not know how much of the 2002 city, if any, is recognizable in the new one. Rockstar has not said, and we found nothing official on it. Claims that compare the two layouts usually rest on unauthorized material, which we do not use and Rockstar has not confirmed. Rumor / unconfirmed If you want to judge a layout claim, start with the leaks guide, and see what Rockstar has published in the map guide.

Why this matters now

Rockstar’s launch date is November 19, 2026. If you played the 2002 game, the name is the connection. If you did not, you do not need it. The new game is described as its own story, in its own decade. For the date and the schedule, go to the release date guide.

Check it yourself

You do not have to take our word for any of this. Three official pages cover almost everything above.

  1. Rockstar’s Vice City game page carries the 2002 description, release date and platforms (Rockstar).
  2. Rockstar’s character and setting page carries the current description of the state and its areas (Rockstar).
  3. Take-Two’s December 4, 2023 release carries the first public description of the setting (Take-Two).

Anything that goes beyond those pages, including the 1986 date and the real-world inspirations, comes from press interviews with the original team, and we label it that way. If a page tells you something about the new city that none of these three say, ask where it came from.
