GTA 6 Launch Day Checklist: What to Do Before November 19
The short version
There are five things that decide whether launch day goes smoothly: your pre-order, your storage, your download, your console, and the unlock time. Each has a task and a date. Some of the facts are confirmed and some are not, and this checklist says which is which.
Four weeks out: decide and buy
- Pick an edition. Standard is $79.99 and Ultimate is $99.99 in the US. See Standard vs Ultimate.
- Pre-order before the bonus cutoff. The Vintage Vice City Pack goes to eligible pre-orders. The Hollywood Reporter says before November 20, other sites say before November 19 (Hollywood Reporter). Do not wait for the last day. See the preorder guide.
- Choose digital or boxed. Reports say boxed copies contain a download code, not a disc (Gaming Bible). Official Either way you will download the game. See the physical edition guide.
- Check the subscription terms. If your pre-order includes a free GTA+ month, read the renewal terms. See the GTA+ guide.
Two weeks out: make room
- Look at your free space. The official download size is not announced. Estimates range from about 120 GB to 200 GB, and larger numbers circulate (GTABoom). Rumor / unconfirmed
- Free more than 200 GB. Delete or archive games you do not play. If you cannot, plan an external or larger drive. See download size.
- Update the console’s system software. Do it now, so it does not hold you up later.
- Test your connection. A wired link is usually steadier than Wi-Fi.
November 12, 2026: preload day
- Look for the preload button on your game’s store page, if you pre-ordered digitally. The date is reported by the Hollywood Reporter and Gaming Bible; one site gives a different date. See the preload guide.
- Start the download early in the day, so you have time to fix problems. Boxed buyers redeem the code and download from the same date, per Gaming Bible. Official
- Keep the console in rest mode and plugged in if the download will run overnight.
The week of launch
- Check Rockstar’s newswire and your store for the unlock time. Rockstar has not published an exact unlock time, so the only confirmed detail is the date. Use the launch time converter to see scenarios until it is announced.
- Look for a day-one update. Gaming Bible warns the final size may change because of one (Gaming Bible). Rumor / unconfirmed Leave time for it.
- Make sure your payment method and account sign-in work. Fix this before launch, not during.
- Charge your controllers. It sounds silly until it is midnight.
Launch day, November 19, 2026
- Do not trust unofficial time claims. Some sites say midnight local time, one says a single worldwide moment. None comes from Rockstar. Rumor / unconfirmed
- Expect busy servers and slow stores, a general pattern on big launches rather than a prediction about this one.
- Know your time zone. Depending on how the unlock works, it could be the evening of November 18 for some players. Our release time guide shows both scenarios.
What you cannot prepare for
Some questions have no answer yet: PC, a performance mode, an online mode and the exact unlock time. If you are waiting on any of them, our status page lists them in one place. For performance, see 60 FPS and PS5 Pro.
A note on scams
Launch weeks bring fake download pages and “early access” offers. No PC version is announced (Rockstar), and preload comes through the console stores. Official If someone offers early access or a key outside those stores, assume it is not real.
